I believe there are more books written and read about the American Civil War than any other period in U.S. history. I know that I have long been fascinated by some of the more...unique elements of the conflict - cross-dressing soldiers, homosexuality among the troops, what exhausted men were forced to forage for food (using acorns to make faux coffee, eating the leather from the belts and shoes), and the advances in medicine (some physicians had never seen so much anatomy before in their lives).
